Good luck fish, pollack that wards off bad luck

"Myungtae" or dried pollack tied with silk yarn and hung on the walls inside one’s home was traditionally considered a token of good fortune. Korean ancestors believed that Myungtaes were able to monitor any incoming misfortune with their never-closed eyes and eat away at any unclean energy that entered the house with its large mouth.

While the tradition has gone practically extinct in modern society, lifestyle brand 2nd universe, a subsidiary of Vergum Making, attempted to bring the tradition back with an upgrade, using the latest technology: the 3-D printer.

Its digital craft version of the tied myungtae is called “Good Luck Fish” and was designed by CEO Chung Yeon-jung. He learned how to use ZBrush, a digital sculpting program, to finalize the drawing’s 3-D version himself. It took him a total of five years to get to the final result, he said, and he made sure to take part in every step of the process because he wanted to create something that he could “truly call [his] own.”

All good luck fish pieces are  equipped with a magnet on the back, allowing it to be placed anywhere. It makes for a perfect housewarming gift, new office/shop gift,  opening ceremony gift, or just an overall token of well wishes for special occassions. 'Good Luck Fish' serves as a heartfelt gesture from the giver, conveying their warm wishes and blessings to the recipient.

Vergum Making is a brand created by Vergum , a design studio that pursues Korean beauty .  We find value in our cultural heritage content and create witty cultural products that contain Korean beauty. Vergum is an alternative spelling of beogeum, which means “second-best.” It drew inspiration from an expression from “Samguksagi,” the 12th-century historical records of Korea’s Three Kingdoms: “to be frugal but not humble; to be gorgeous but not extravagant.”

“It’s all about moderation.. Beogeum has potential of becoming the best, but it’s about staying modest and refraining from being biased.".

Vergum Making creates witty cultural products and aims to convey the values of the past to us today through cultural products. We look at tradition from a new perspective and creates stories that connect the past and the present. Korea has great traditional materials as much as its long history. When we think of 'tradition', we usually think of it as something heavy and difficult to preserve, but if we look at tradition from a new perspective, we can find witty stories within it. Wit is a good medium that connects the values of the past to the present.
